Famed Cook Political Report Changes Rating In Battleground District to Toss Up

Garden Grove, CA — Today, election experts at the Cook Political Report have changed their rating from Lean Republican to Toss-Up, confirming Derek Tran's surging momentum and reflecting the escalating corruption scandals tarnishing Steel's campaign. The news follows the experts at Inside Elections also adjusting their rating to show a more competitive contest. Following three public polls showing the corrupt Congresswoman Michelle Steel in a dead heat with Tran and the FBI Raid on Steel’s former colleague and longtime political ally Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do, it’s clear that the vulnerable incumbent is in more trouble than ever.

Michelle Steel finds herself in an increasingly precarious position as new revelations expose her deep ties to disgraced Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do. The Do scandal is just the latest blow to Steel’s embattled campaign, three recent public polls show that the race between Steel and her Democratic challenger, Derek Tran, is now a dead heat. At a solemn reunion in Orange County, dozens of elderly Vietnamese Americans gathered recently to reconnect with others once held at Suối Máu, a camp where dissidents and American allies were imprisoned after the fall of Saigon.

In the sea of gray hair and faded army uniforms, one younger face stood out: 43-year-old Derek Tran, a Democrat running for Congress.

The 45th Congressional District has the largest population of people of Vietnamese descent outside of Vietnam, but has never had a Vietnamese American representative in Washington.

Democrats hope Tran can buck that trend.

ALADS Endorses Tran, Emphasizing His Commitment To Public Safety

Today, the Association of Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs (ALADS), the largest association of deputy sheriffs and district attorney investigators in the United States, announced its endorsement of Derek Tran for Congress in California’s 45th Congressional District. Representing over 8,000 sworn law enforcement officers, ALADS's endorsement adds to a growing coalition of public safety organizations backing Tran. The announcement comes days after POLITICO reported outside polling showing a neck-and-neck race against Michelle Steel.

Tran’s effort to unseat GOP Rep. Michelle Steel was considered by Democrats to be competitive but a bit of a reach — Steel had herself ousted a Democratic incumbent in 2020 and batted away a challenger in 2022.

Then Joe Biden dropped out of the race.

Tran and Steel are tied at 47 percent each, according to a poll from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee shared exclusively with POLITICO.
