Derek Tran Statement on Taiwan

Donald Trump’s continued undermining of longstanding American foreign policy is a direct threat to democracy across the globe. His recent comments asserting that Taiwan should pay the United States more for its defense are absurd and directly contradict our commitments to the people of Taiwan, as expressly stated in the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances.

A strong and prosperous Taiwan will guarantee peace and prosperity in the region. Our two governments have enjoyed cooperation on a range of interests, including security, economic cooperation and development, global engagement, humanitarian relief, and counter-terrorism. The United States has an abiding interest in a peaceful cross-strait resolution. We must continue to support dialogue and cooperation between Beijing and Taipei. The United States should remain committed to preserving peace along the Taiwan Strait and preventing unwarranted aggression throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

As the son of refugees whose parents fled the Communist regime in Vietnam so that their children could realize the American Dream in Southern California, I pledge to fully support our nation's commitments to the people of Taiwan and stand up against the aggressions of the Chinese Communist Party.
